Introduction to Nutritional Therapy

What to Expect & Why It’s So Much More Than “Just Food”

If there’s one thing I want every client to walk away with, it’s this:

Your body is not broken.
It is always communicating with you—and my role is to help you understand that language.

Nutritional therapy is not about handing you a rigid plan or telling you what you “should” do. It’s about education, awareness, and empowerment—so you can confidently make decisions for your own body and truly feel connected to it again.

*Keep in mind many clients like to double up my services, starting with an hour nutritional therapy consultation and ending with an hour of nurturing and relaxing massage therapy:)

Every Session is Different—Because Every Person is Different

There is no “standard” session here.

Every person walks in with a different story, different stressors, different history, and different goals. Because of that, every session is structured uniquely to you.

That said, most initial visits begin with a relaxed meet-and-greet style conversation, where we take a deep dive into your life as a whole—not just your diet.

We’ll explore:

  • Your stress levels and how you handle stressors

  • Your daily lifestyle and pace of life

  • Work environment and home environment

  • Sleep patterns and energy throughout the day

  • What you’re currently eating (with a meal log)

  • Medications and supplements you’re on

  • Environmental exposures (including water purity, toxins/chemicals you may work with or live in, EMFs, radiation exposure, and digital load)

This gives us a full picture of you as a whole human—not just symptoms on paper.

Identifying Nutritional Deficiencies & Root Causes

From there, we begin connecting the dots.

Nutritional deficiencies don’t just “happen”—they are often influenced by:

  • Chronic stress

  • Medications (that burn through minerals, vitamins, antioxidants, etc etc.)

  • Poor digestion or absorption

  • Highly processed foods or lack of nutrient-dense foods

We’ll look at what your body may be missing—and more importantly, why.

Understanding Food Through an Evolutionary Lens to The Modern Day Diet

I love teaching clients how we got here - to what we eat, how it’s harvested, genetically modified, and packaged for our consumption today.

We’ll talk through:

  • The foundation of early human diets (hunters first gatherers second)

  • The impact of the agricultural revolution

  • The rise of refined sugar

  • The industrial food system (think large corporations like Kellogg’s, Hershey, and PepsiCo)

  • And how modern life—including digital overload—has shifted our health

This isn’t about fear—it’s about understanding context, so you can make informed choices.

The Power of Epigenetics

One of my favorite topics to share is how much control we actually have.

We’ll touch on epigenetics—how your environment, food, and lifestyle influence how your genes are expressed.

A powerful example comes from Francis M. Pottenger and his well-known cat studies, which demonstrated how dramatically diet can impact health across generations.

The takeaway?
What you do daily matters—and it shapes your future.

The Importance of Bio-Individuality

This is where everything comes together. There is no one-size-fits-all diet/lifestyle.

Your needs are shaped by:

  • Your current lifestyle

  • Stress levels

  • Past traumas or surgeries

  • Medications

  • Activity level

  • Environment

A few examples:

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals have unique nutritional needs

  • Those with autoimmune conditions may need a more tailored approach

  • Digestive dysfunction may require temporary dietary changes

  • Blood sugar imbalances often require different macronutrient strategies

  • Athletes or physically demanding jobs need higher fuel and recovery support

What works for someone else may not work for you—and that’s okay.

Foundational Education We Cover

During your session, we also build a strong foundation in key areas like:

  • Hydration and mineral balance

  • Digestion and gut health

  • Stress and the nervous system

  • Blood sugar regulation

  • Understanding Macronutrients vs. calorie counting

  • Environmental influences on health

We often debunk common myths—like the idea that a calorie deficit is the only path to weight loss or health.

Recommendations & Next Steps

At the end of your session, you’ll walk away with:

  • Personalized dietary suggestions

  • Lifestyle adjustments

  • Possible supplement recommendations

  • Optional lab testing recommendations for deeper insight

Everything is practical, realistic, and tailored to you.

Continuing Your Journey

From there, it’s completely up to you how you’d like to move forward.

I offer:

  • Monthly packages (3 sessions + weekly check-ins via phone/text for ongoing support)

  • À la carte follow-ups whenever you feel ready to continue, ask questions, or fine-tune your plan

Final Thoughts

This work is not about perfection.

It’s about learning your body, understanding its signals, and building trust with yourself again.

Because at the end of the day:

You are your own best advocate.
And when you truly understand your body—you move through life differently.

It’s all about getting back to living life real! Which is why I named my small business Lex Lives Real.
